Geiko by John Foster. It is a collection of 100 color photographs that give
a glimpse into the world of Kyoto’s maiko and geisha, a world of rare beauty
that has fascinated Japanese and Westerners alike for more than a century.
The images were taken in all five of Kyoto’s geisha districts, mainly from
2003-2006. The photographs include candid portraits of maiko and geisha,
night views that capture the brilliant colors of their kimono and makeup as
they move down lantern-lit streets, and images taken at several of Kyoto’s
festivals.
One Hundred Views of Maiko and Geiko is one of Toho Publishing’s
all-time bestselling books, but it has only been available in Japan. Now the
rest of the world has a chance to enjoy this unique aspect of Japanese
culture through the app Maiko and Geiko.


Profile:

John Paul Foster is a fine art photographer specializing in images of Kyoto,
especially geisha and maiko. He is the only photographer in the world to
have books published on geisha and maiko in both Japan (One Hundred Views of
Maiko and Geiko) and the United States (Geisha & Maiko of Kyoto: Beauty,
Art, & Dance). He is also the author of One Hundred Views of Kyoto.
